Recently a friend and I made plans to read the Bible through, and as we considered where to start, I naturally suggested Genesis. But the truth is, as you know, we've all made ambitious Bible-reading goals before that begin with Genesis, and after a while, Genesis begins to reak of yesterday's manna--the number of times we've read it only serving to remind us of the number of failed attempts we'd made at reading the Bible before.
So we started with Exodus, also known as the new Genesis. In the Hebrew Torah, the Book of Exodus is not actually Exodus, but rather the first few words of the book: "These are the Names of." Not quite as exciting or poetic as "Genesis" (Hebrew for "In the beginning'), but I suppose that might be the reason for "Exodus."
